Baby Whisperer!

Baby Whisperer!

We attended Gideon at Oak Clinic Osteopathy when our baby son was 2 months old and suffering from “Colic”. We as parents were not satisfied with the notion of a new born baby so distressed without apparent reason. The advice from the others that he would “outgrow” it did little to reassure or comfort. As I had a traumatic birth I felt that there may be a connection between the birth and our baby’s distress. Gideon amazingly detected every strain and tension that existed in our son without any collateral from us...

We avoided antibiotics

I bring all my children to the Oak Clinic for various reasons. I have avoided antibiotics on several occasions by using the Oak Clinic as my first port-of-call. I have recommended Gideon to many friends and will continue to do so as I find the benefits invaluable. Colette, Portroe, Co Tipperary

Sports injury & performance

While we all know the benefits to our health of taking part in sport and exercising generally, we also realise that sometimes we can get injured as a consequence. These injuries can be from overuse, tiredness resulting in error, poor training practices,  accidents and traumatic impacts, improper equipment and lack of fitness. No athlete wants to interrupt their training schedule, and it is only in exceptional circumstances will you be asked to take time off as generally improvements can be made during a treatment session and advice given so...

Postural Fatigue

As time goes by, bad habits such as slouching and inactivity can cause muscle fatigue and tension, eventually leading to poor posture which may result in back and joint pain. Different careers bring their own unique difficulties – drivers often suffer from lower back and neck pain as a result of sitting for prolonged periods; if you answer the work phone on the same side every time, it can lead to neck and shoulder problems; some workers including nurses and builders have to lift heavy loads and suffer lower back pain as a result....

Foot & Ankle Pain

Foot and ankle pain has many causes. Including sprains, strains and overuse injuries, heel spurs, plantarfasciitis and jammed or dropped foot bones. Having had a twisted ankle, even if it happened several years ago, can result in later years in foot, ankle and knee pain. The osteopathic approach is to investigate and treat any disorders in foot and ankle mechanics. When the bones are in their right place and the ligaments are doing their job, muscle strength returns and the foot and ankle are able to heal themselves. Specific exercises are...

Knee injury & Pain

There are many possible causes of knee pain and taking an in depth case history looking at exactly where the pain is, how the injury happened and when it hurtsoften give important clues. Knee pain may be referred from the hip, ankle or lower back. The osteopath’s job is to conduct an examinatin and  make a correct diagnosis in order to treat the knee pain. As well as joint tenderness and pain, an injured knee may click, give way, grind, lock or swell. Many different structures within the knee may be affected and gentle, targetted...

Hip Pain

It is possible that problems with your lower back can be referred to the hip area and also that hip pain itself may be referred to the lower back, thigh or groin area. Through a series of tests your osteopath will be  able to determine which structure is causing the problem. The force required to walk, run or jump means our hip joints have to cope with more than our body’s own weight. To assist the hip, the ligaments, muscles, tendons and bursa help shield the joint. When one or more become inflammed through trauma or overuse, the hip does...

Wrist & Hand Pain

The wrist and hand contain many small bones, even more ligaments that hold them in place and also tendons that attach the hand muscles to bone, allowing for movement. When they are damaged it can  lead to a range of different problems. Tendinitis is inflammation of the tough cords attaching the muscles to the bones. While it can happen in any joint it most frequently occurs in the wrist and fingers. When the tendon is irritated, swelling and pain result. Tenosynovitis is inflammation of the lining of the sheaths which hold the tendons, this...

Elbow Pain

Elbow pain is a relatively common problem and can be caused by inflammed tendons, ligaments and bursa in different areas of the joint. The tendons become inflammed due to muscles tightening from overuse or sports injury, even from prolonged periods of writing or typing. Tennis elbow (medial epicondylitis), golfers elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and plasterers elbow would all be very common. Strains involving stretches or tears to the ligaments supporting the joint can happen when the elbow is over extended. Another cause of elbow pain is...

Shoulder Pain

Being the most moveable joint in the body also makes the shoulder relatively unstable. The shoulder needs to be firmly anchored by it’s muscles, ligaments and tendons and any injury or overuse can cause instability and pain. Injury can lead to underuse of the shouder and further instability problems and also ‘frozen shoulder’. Degeneration also causes pain and discomfort as do many diseases (such as gallbladder, liver or heart disease) any of which may cause pain to radiate to the shoulder. Restriction of movement in the shoulder has...

Neck Stiffness & Pain

There are many causes of neck pain including stress and anxiety, whiplash, using laptops, prolonged use of musical instruments; driving or poor sleeping positions. Neck pain can also be caused by wear and tear and other disease processes or disc problems. The pain may radiate into your shoulder or arm and you may have ‘pins and needles’ in the arms and fingers. It is important to tell your osteopath as much detail as possible  to assist them in making a diagnosis. Your osteopath will assess what is causing the problem and give...

Back Pain

Osteopaths are well-known for being experts in the treatment of back pain. There are now guidelines published by the NHS, which have shown manual therapy including osteopathy to be an effective treatment in non-specific low back pain lasting over 6 weeks but less than a year. It is encouraging to see evidence based research highlighting the benefits of osteopathy, although the experiences of many osteopaths and patients are more encouraging still! Back pain may be caused by many different factors and combinations of them. In most cases there...

Emergency C-section

Emergency C-section

We brought our son to see Gideon when he was two weeks old. He was born by emergency caesarean section after a13 hour induced labour. As a result of so much pressure against my pelvis from the induction he had deep strains in his body. During several treatments with Gideon he straightened out, became more relaxed and we felt him change in our arms. It was such a relief to us that he was being relieved of his pain and we are sure that the strong robust 18 month old he now has grown into is mostly down to Gideon’s work with him. Jill &...

Pregnant & lighter!

Pregnant & lighter!

Six months into my second pregnancy and I was feeling tired, uncomfortable, creaky and cranky. As soon as I stood up after a session with Gideon I immediately felt lighter, straighter and it felt like my baby had been given lots more room to manoeuvre. It’s like my body is properly supporting and cradling my bump now as opposed to being dragged down by it. I actually felt lighter! As well as all those physical effects I also noticed my mood improved and I felt stronger, more confidant and open. Jill Beardsworth

Our baby boy cried a lot

Our baby boy cried a lot

When our baby boy Tomas was born in October he was extremely unsettled, cried a lot, didn’t sleep (so we didn’t sleep!) and had terrible trouble with wind. When he was three weeks old, we rang Gideon for help. On our first visit Tomas spewed up lots of milk as Gideon worked on him which gave him great relief, he had never really spewed up before this. After our second visit, it was like we had taken home a new child. He was so much happier and the crying pretty much stopped. The wind problem was hugely improved and Tomas started...
